Shoka Shofutai Sanshuike

Martha writes: We will be arranging Sanshuike which is Shoka Shofutai style using three materials. While the form is traditional, this shoka is more “modern” than either Isshuike or Nishuike. It is brighter and more colorful with a greater sense of space and volume. Rules can be a little more relaxed; for instance, in Nishuike, land and water materials are not mixed but in Sanshuike this is allowed. Materials may also be combined in the same yakueda.
Sanshuike Kabuwake

Deborah writes: Following on from the morning lesson, the Kabuwake technique will be utilized in the afternoon. This involves using a Suiban with 2 kenzans. It is a fun way to play with the three materials idea and figure out which is the best combination for shin, soe and tai. Bring a Suiban (flat bottomed) container and two sizes of kenzan. Make sure one kenzan is smaller than the other and both will fit in your Suiban with some space between them. See sample diagram below. (Note: if you don’t have a Suiban, a reasonably wide, shallow bowl will suffice.
